There is still a tendency for many men to keep things to themselves.

Stress, anxiety, pressure at work, financial worries, relationship problems and loneliness are often pushed down rather than spoken about openly. A lot of men grow up believing they should simply carry on regardless, even when things feel difficult. The reality is that everyone struggles at times.

These figures are difficult to ignore, and they highlight why conversations around men’s mental health are so important.

For many people, motorcycling provides more than just a hobby.

Riding offers a sense of freedom and focus that can be difficult to find elsewhere. When you are on a bike, your attention is on the road, the surroundings and the ride itself. It creates a break from the constant noise of daily life.

Many riders speak openly about how motorcycling helps reduce stress levels and improves their mental wellbeing. The social side of biking can also make a real difference. Whether it is meeting people at ride-outs, talking in a garage over a cup of tea or simply sharing a common interest, the motorcycle community often creates strong friendships and support networks.

Of course, riding is not a replacement for professional mental health support where it is needed. However, having positive outlets, strong social connections and opportunities to clear your mind can play an important role in maintaining mental wellbeing.

One of the biggest problems surrounding men’s mental health is silence.

A lot of men still feel pressure to appear strong at all times, even when they are struggling internally. Bringing mental health discussions into the open helps challenge that mindset. Simple conversations between friends, family members or colleagues can genuinely make a difference.

Sometimes asking someone how they are really doing can open the door to a conversation they may have been avoiding for months.

Raising Money and Awareness to Support men’s Mental Health

Supporting men’s mental health charities can make a real difference. This is one of the reasons I am taking part in the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride.

Funds raised by The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride help to power Movember’s work across two of the most complex issues facing men around the globe: prostate cancer and mental health.

The event brings together motorcycle riders from around the world to raise awareness and funding for men’s mental health initiatives and prostate cancer charities. It combines a passion for motorcycles with an important cause and encourages conversations that too often go unspoken.

For me, the ride is about supporting awareness, helping charities continue their work and encouraging more men to speak openly when they are struggling.

It’s Good to Talk

Mental health affects all of us in one way or another, either personally or through people we care about. The more openly we discuss it, the easier it becomes for others to seek help without fear of judgement.

If you are struggling, speak to someone you trust. If a friend seems withdrawn or not themselves, check in with them. Small conversations can have a bigger impact than people realise.

And sometimes, even a simple ride can provide a moment of calm when it is needed most.
