I recently spent a weekend in north Wales, staying in the lakeside town of Bala, and quickly realised just how much I love riding motorbikes. Bala is perfectly positioned on the edge of Snowdonia, with its dramatic mountains, sweeping valleys, and winding roads that attract motorcyclists from all over. It’s the kind of place where two wheels can turn an ordinary weekend into an unforgettable adventure – however, mine was tucked up back at home.

Surrounded by Bikes

I was away with friends for a short break and had just completed a long walk up Snowdon. It was an incredible experience, and I returned to Bala feeling exhilarated, if a little weary, and ready for a rest. As I reached the town centre, the roar of motorcycles immediately caught my attention. Groups of riders were passing through, eventually parking near Bala Lake, which has always been a favourite stopping point for bikers before they head off into Snowdonia or further afield. We made our way back to our Airbnb, the fading sounds of engines and exhausts following the riders as they disappeared into the distance.

The following morning, I walked down to the lake with my dog and struck up conversations with a few of the riders. I listened as they shared their planned routes – twisty roads through Betws-y-Coed, the bends around Barmouth, and stretches that lead into the heart of Snowdonia. It was great to have a chat, but I couldn’t hide my envy as they were enjoying Wales on two wheels whereas I was confined to the power of my two feet.

Why Wales is a Rider’s Dream

It’s easy to see why Wales draws motorcyclists in. The roads wind through mountains, forests, and lakeside valleys, offering a mix of challenging bends and open stretches. Once you leave the towns with their low speed limits, the open roads allow for smooth, flowing riding, with scenery that makes every twist and turn worthwhile. Snowdonia, in particular, connects seamlessly with countless other scenic routes across the Welsh countryside, making it a perfect hub for exploring on two wheels.

Perfect Conditions… Even Without My Bike

The weather was surprisingly warm and sunny for March, perfect conditions for a ride. Nevertheless, I carried on with my walks, and was able to savour the sunshine, wandering through fields dotted with spring lambs while the hills shimmered in the sunlight. Spending the weekend on foot with friends was thoroughly enjoyable, even if a small part of me couldn’t help wishing I was out on my bike.

A Chance Encounter

During one of my walks, I unexpectedly ran into my advanced riding instructor at a petrol station. He was just pulling in to fill up as I was passing by. We had a brief catch-up before he set off on his new Ducati Desert X. It was a pleasant coincidence to bump into him like that, miles away from our home town.

Final Thoughts

By the end of the weekend, I’d soaked up plenty of fresh air and exercise and been treated to some genuinely breathtaking scenery. It also served as a reminder of just how fortunate I am to ride.

There will always be someone wishing they could explore the roads and landscapes that we often take for granted. So, next time you set off on your bike, make the most of it – cherish the freedom and the privilege, especially when your ride takes you through a place as remarkable as Wales.

Unsurprisingly, the moment I got home late on Sunday, I was straight out on my Africa Twin for an hour, just to get my fix.
