Every good ride deserves a worthwhile stop, and on a recent outing I found exactly that at Hetty’s Tea Shop – a canal side tearoom housed within a sympathetically restored Grade II listed former Staffordshire Moorlands warehouse, dating back around 200 years.

A Scenic Canal-Side Location

Hetty’s Tea Shop sits on Foxt Road in Froghall, near Froghall Wharf and on the Caldon Canal. It’s an attractive setting, with towpaths, greenery and narrowboats drifting quietly past. After a morning tackling damp late-winter country lanes, arriving somewhere peaceful by the water feels like a proper break in the journey rather than simply stopping to grab a quick bite.

A Warm and Characterful Welcome

Inside, Hetty’s feels reassuringly traditional. It’s not trying to be ultra-modern or trendy. Instead, there’s a welcoming atmosphere, a touch of whimsy in the décor and a sense that this is a place built on simple hospitality. It’s the sort of tearoom where muddy boots, walking gear and bike leathers don’t feel out of place.

There’s seating indoors as well as outside when the weather cooperates. On a bright day, sitting in the garden with a mug of tea while looking out towards the canal is hard to beat. It’s easy to see why walkers, cyclists and motorbike riders alike make it part of their regular routes.

Proper Food After Proper Riding

After a few hours on the road, you want something satisfying rather than fussy. Hetty’s menu covers the classics you’d hope for in a countryside tea shop. Expect hearty sandwiches, roasts of the day and warming soups, alongside light lunches and a tempting selection of cakes and bakes. There’s a wide selection of hot and cold drinks to accompany your meal, along with the ever-popular traditional cream tea.

The portions are generous without being overwhelming, and everything feels freshly prepared. Whether you’re stopping for a full lunch or simply a coffee and a slice of cake, it hits the spot. There are also options to suit different dietary needs, which makes it easier when riding with a mixed group.

I’d just missed the breakfast service, which finishes at midday, so instead I chose the avocado on toast topped with poached eggs – and it was absolutely delicious.

Why It Works So Well for Motorbike Days Out

When planning a ride in the Peak District, a good stop needs to tick a few boxes. Hetty’s manages to do just that.

First, the location works beautifully as part of a circular route through the Southern Peak District and Staffordshire Moorlands. The surrounding roads offer plenty of bends and elevation changes, making the journey there as enjoyable as the destination itself.

Second, the parking and layout remove the usual stress of finding somewhere bike-friendly. There’s space to park securely and gather with friends without feeling in the way.

Third, the atmosphere encourages you to slow down. Riding can be exhilarating, but it’s the stops that often define the day. A relaxed setting, decent food and the chance to chat about the morning’s ride all add to the experience.

A Few Practical Pointers

If you’re heading there at a weekend or during good weather, it’s worth arriving earlier rather than later. Well-known spots like this in picturesque locations often attract plenty of visitors, particularly when walkers and cyclists are making the most of the area too. Even though it was still February when we called in, several tables had already been reserved.

As always, it’s sensible to check current opening days and times before setting off, as smaller independent tea rooms sometimes adjust their hours seasonally.

Final Thoughts

My first visit to Hetty’s Tea Shop felt less like discovering a random café and more like finding a place that naturally fits into my riding routine. It offers good food, a welcoming atmosphere and a peaceful canal-side setting that provides a genuine break from the road.

For anyone exploring the area by motorbike, it’s well worth adding to your route.
