We were six family and friends looking for something a little different to do in Dubrovnik. As you know I enjoy getting out on two wheels, and I’m also partial to a bit of green laning. However, on this occasion we decided to make an exception and swap two wheels for four and ride some quad bikes. Nevertheless a link to motorcycle adventures revealed itself latter that day.
Our quad biking experience with Kojan Koral took us through Croatian countryside, forest trails, river crossings and streams – with plenty of dust and a lot of laughs along the way.
Quad Biking with Kojan Koral
Having booked a quad biking adventure the the Kojan Koral website, we found that from the moment we were picked up from our hotel, the whole day was incredibly well structured. Less than an hour from the old town of Dubrovnik and we arrived at the Kojan ranch.
Their website describes the ranch as – “The oldest and most professional ranch and horse stable in the Dubrovnik region. With more than a decade of experience, combined with the unspoiled nature and most exciting terrains for outdoor adventures.“
Founded by Pero Kojan, and originally offering horse riding tours, the ranch branched out into off-road adventures with Buggies and ATV’s. The later is why we were there of course and as we arrived at the ranch, it was time to get kitted up and meet our own steeds for the day.
It turned out that the owner Pero Kojan was our guide for the day and he introduced to our quads and the rules of the ranch.
Throughout the day I got chatting to Pero and it turns out that this Croatian entrepreneur was also a keen adventurer whose motorcycle travels have taken him on challenging, largely self-supported journeys through some of the world’s most remote landscapes. I’ve added a bit more of his back story below for those that are interested.
Pero Koral’s Motorcycle Adventures
Pero is a keen adventurer whose motorcycle travels have taken him on challenging, largely self-supported journeys through some of the world’s most remote landscapes.
His first major expedition was a 40-day, approximately 10,000-kilometre solo journey around Australia in 2015–16, riding a BMW R1200GS. The trip included around 1,150 km of difficult off-road riding through remote desert.
Following his Australian adventure, Kojan undertook an 65-day motorcycle expedition through South America, beginning in Santiago, Chile, in January 2017. He shipped his BMW R1200GS from Europe and travelled through Chile, Argentina, Patagonia, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil, covering roughly 20,000 kilometres, with around half of the journey off-road. His route took him through the Andes, Patagonia, national parks, deserts and remote border regions.
He documented his journeys extensively through photography, video and drone footage, and later shared his experiences through presentations, films and media interviews.
Riding Quads Through the Croatian Countryside
After the firm but necessary briefing from Pero, we were ready to head out into the Croatian countryside. It’s important to not take these quads lightly, whilst they are restricted for the safety of the riders, they are big machines but can still keep a good pace. So I’d highly recommend listening carefully to the briefing.
The quad biking route less was fantastic, it wasn’t just a case of following the same track for a couple of hours. We had a proper mix of terrain, including gravel tracks, forest trails, river crossings and sections where we actually rode down streams. At times we were also riding on the top of cliffs above the beautiful Adriatic Sea.
In short, there was some seriously impressive scenery along the way.
Not surprisingly, the weather had been very dry prior to us getting there, so there wasn’t much mud. There was, however, a LOT of dust.
By the end of the ride, the dust had found its way onto pretty much everything – our clothes, boots, the quads, and probably places we didn’t even know could collect dust!
Thankfully, once you return to Kojan Koral HQ, they have a way of helping you get rid of it. However, I’ll let you discover exactly how they do that for yourself.
The river crossings were definitely one of the highlights for me. Luckily, our guide knew exactly where to take us through the water. You knew you were going to get wet, but nobody was there to stay clean – between the river crossings and the dust, keeping clean was never really an option!
What About The Quad Bikes
The Kojan Koral quad bikes were 700cc Can-Am Outlander models – all in excellent condition and perfectly suited to handling the different surfaces really well.
The route gave them plenty to deal with, from gravel and rougher tracks to woodland sections and as mentioned above plenty of water crossings, but the bikes felt capable throughout.
With six of us riding together, it was also reassuring to know that everything was being managed properly. The guides obviously knew the route and the hazards along the way, but kept the experience enjoyable while making sure everyone was safe and comfortable.
Would I Recommend Quad Biking in Dubrovnik?
Absolutely.
This was easily one of the most memorable things we did during our time in Croatia.
It’s different from the usual Dubrovnik sightseeing experience and gives you the chance to get out into the countryside and see a completely different side of the area.
The combination of quad biking and scenic trails made for a brilliant day out.
Just remember – You’re probably going to get wet. You’re definitely going to get dusty. And you’re almost certainly going to have a lot of fun.
For the six of us, it was a fantastic experience with Kojan Koral in Dubrovnik, and one we’ll all remember for a long time.
