The countdown has begun.

In a matter of days, I’ll be loading up the BMW R1300GS and heading for Germany with two good friends for what promises to be a memorable week on the road. After a frustrating start to the year that saw me miss several planned trips and events through injury, this ride couldn’t have come at a better time.

While it’s not the longest adventure I’ve undertaken, it’s certainly one I’ve been looking forward to more than most.

Our journey starts with a crossing on the Eurotunnel into France, where we’ll spend our first night before continuing east. From there, we’ll ride through Belgium for a day, enjoying the change of scenery before crossing into Germany and beginning the main part of the trip.

The plan is to explore some of the excellent riding roads around the Taunus region before continuing south towards Heidelberg and beyond. The Taunus area, located north-west of Frankfurt, is known for its wooded hills, sweeping bends and scenic countryside, making it a popular destination for motorcyclists and cyclists alike. Heidelberg, meanwhile, remains one of Germany’s most recognisable historic cities, with its famous castle overlooking the Neckar River and the old town below.

Of course, the best motorcycle trips are rarely defined by a rigid itinerary. We have a rough route in mind, but there will be plenty of opportunities to follow an interesting road, stop in an unexpected village or simply see where the day takes us.

One of the things I’m most excited about is giving the R1300GS its first proper touring adventure. I’ve spent time getting familiar with the bike closer to home, but there’s a big difference between day rides and living with a motorcycle for more than a week on the road.

Long days in the saddle, changing weather conditions, unfamiliar roads and fully loaded luggage all reveal a bike’s true character. Germany feels like the perfect place to do exactly that. After all, it is the homeland of BMW Motorrad, and few countries are better suited to covering serious mileage while still offering fantastic riding roads.

The travelling party is completed by a Yamaha Tenere 700 and a KTM 890 Adventure R, giving us an interesting mix of adventure bikes with very different personalities. No doubt there will be plenty of good-natured debate on our Cardo’s, at fuel stops and over evening meals about which machine is best suited to the journey.

For me, however, this trip is about more than motorcycles.

Germany is a country I know well. During the early 2000s, I spent time working there and have many fond memories of that period of my life. One of the highlights of this trip will be revisiting the town where I lived all those years ago.

Returning to somewhere that once felt familiar is always a strange experience. You wonder what has changed, what has stayed the same and whether the places that seemed so significant years ago still evoke the same feelings today. I’m looking forward to finding out.

There’s something special about combining new experiences with old memories. On one hand, I’ll be discovering Germany again through the eyes of a traveller and motorcyclist. On the other, I’ll be revisiting a chapter of my own history that I haven’t seen in many years.

As departure day approaches, preparations are well underway. The route is taking shape, luggage is being organised and the usual last-minute checks are being carried out. Before long, we’ll be rolling onto the train, heading beneath the Channel and beginning what I hope will be a week filled with great roads, good company and plenty of stories to bring home.

After spending much of this year watching adventures from the sidelines, simply being able to make this trip feels like an achievement in itself.
