Embarking on the road to becoming an advanced rider is an exhilarating chapter in my motorcycle journey. Whether it’s refining my road positioning, honing observation skills, or gaining unparalleled bike control, the IAM RoadSmart advanced rider qualification beckons, promising to elevate my skills and prepare me for the myriad challenges on the road.
In this transformative course, I’ve been paired with a highly skilled Observer—an Advanced Rider with an additional Institute of the Motor Industry qualification.
The heart of the course lies in a series of observed rides, each contributing to the development of my core riding skills. Guided by the ‘IPSGA’ framework (Information, Position, Speed, Gear, Acceleration), I’ll learn to seamlessly apply these principles to various on-road scenarios. From conquering bends to mastering motorways and executing smooth overtakes, each ride marks a milestone in my journey to advanced proficiency.
As I delve into IAM RoadSmart’s comprehensive course, I’m not just acquiring skills; I’m unlocking the full potential of my riding experience. This is my opportunity to ride with newfound confidence and finesse, embracing the road with a heightened sense of expertise. Join me on this exciting ride as I unveil the challenges I face throughout my observation rides.
Day one: Initial observation ride
During my first observed ride, Steve, my observer, orchestrated a fantastic journey to evaluate my riding skills. He skillfully guided me through various scenarios, ensuring I showcased my riding abilities. Thankfully, my solid foundation was apparent, but it’s important for me to remain receptive to constructive criticism and feedback.
Throughout the ride, Steve provided insightful observations and highlighted specific points for improvement. Despite these areas of focus, I was genuinely pleased with the feedback, which not only pinpointed my strengths but also illuminated areas for growth. The experience left me motivated to delve into the IAM advanced rider associate handbook for further study.
One key takeaway from the ride was the significance of selecting the right road position. Steve emphasised how strategic positioning sets the stage for successfully navigating upcoming challenges on the road ahead.
My Tiger 900 was the perfect steed for today’s ride and my newfound understanding has heightened my appreciation for the intricacies of riding and fueled my anticipation for the next session.
Wrapping up the day with a coffee and a chat, I can say that it was genuinely a pleasure to get out and learn something new.
