There’s a special kind of thrill that comes from riding a motorbike down the winding, narrow lanes of the UK countryside. My friends and I affectionately call this kind of riding “squirrelling.”

Not to be confused with green laning where you are predominantly riding off road trails that are generally more technical and the surface does not tend to be tarmac. The country lanes I’m describing here are actual roads, where the surface is tarmac but these are roads that are not widely used, so it’s normal to find them covered in mud from local farming activity. More often than not, vehicle tyres have carved into the mud over time, meaning you are ultimately riding down little tracks either side of what has become a small mound of earth covered in grass.

Squirrelling is more than just a leisurely ride; it’s a return to simpler times, a rekindling of the joy and freedom we felt as teenagers. The moment I swing my leg over my trusty CRF300L, I’m transported back to my youth, carefree and full of anticipation for the road ahead. There’s no rush, no deadlines – just the sheer enjoyment of riding my bike.

The beauty of squirrelling lies in the unexpected. As we navigate these lanes, we come across beautiful spots to stop and take in the views, we explore new villages and hamlets and regularly encounter the local wildlife. Creatures such as deer, rabbits, and abundance of game birds like pheasants, but what animal do we encounter the most? That’s simple, it’s the squirrels.

These agile little critters dart across the road, adding a touch of whimsy to our journey as our paths cross.

The CRF300L is the perfect companion for this type of adventure. Its agility and versatility make it an ideal bike to ride on these lanes. The bike effortlessly glides over the mud, grips firmly on gravel, and handles the tarmac with finesse. It’s the kind of motorcycle that encourages you to take the road less traveled.

I’ve regularly find myself taking the long way to work just to squeeze in some precious squirrelling before my workday begins. It’s become a regular ritual that sets a positive tone for the day ahead, like a dose of two wheeled therapy.

Squirrelling reminds me that adventure is never too far away, and it’s not always about those big trips or technical riding. It’s a chance to appreciate the beauty of the countryside, and to treasure the camaraderie of friends.

In a world where everything moves at breakneck speed, squirrelling through the UK lanes is a gentle reminder to slow down, and take a breath. It’s a celebration of a time gone by when I was 16 years old and having the same kind of adventures, exploring the lanes with friends on our little two stroke motorbikes.

So, if you ever find yourself yearning for a simpler, more carefree time, I encourage you to grab your motorcycle, head out to the country, and embrace the art of squirrelling.

Until next time – work hard, ride safe!
