MY JOURNEY INTO GREEN LANING BEGAN WITH THE TRUSTY 2016 HONDA CRF250L; HOWEVER, WHEN THE OPPORTUNITY AROSE TO UPGRADE TO THE 2023 CRF300L, I COULDN’T RESIST!
Why the CRF?
I really underestimated the joy my original CRF25L would bring me, it lead to an unforgettable love affair with off-road exploration. So upgrading to the CRF300L, a reliable all-rounder, both on and off the beaten path was a complete no-brainer. With just 800 miles on the clock, this nearly new beauty promised to take my green laning adventures to new heights. Yet, having purchased my 300, I was eager to tailor my ride, so I embarked on a series of enhancements, transforming my CRF300L into my ultimate off-road companion. I unveil further details of the various upgrades below, from suspension fine-tuning to performance boosts and accessories that redefine both the bike’s capabilities and my riding experience.
Let’s start with the elephant in the room – The suspension on the CRF’s suspension is shocking (excuse the pun).
Suspension – Rally Raid
Based on the wallowing I experienced on my first ride out on the CRF300L, addressing the stock suspension was top of my list of investments. I opted for Rally Raid upgrades for both front and rear. Custom-tuned for superior damping, these enhancements ensure stability and agility over rugged terrain, turning challenging rides into much more enjoyable adventures. Thanks to the installation expertise of Martin Wittering at Torque Racing, my bike now conquers trails with newfound confidence.
Tower – Adventure-Men-Cave Rally
For enhanced visibility and accessory versatility, I integrated the Adventure-Men-Cave ENDUROL8NAV tower. Not only does it elevate the CRF’s aesthetics, but it also serves as a robust platform for mounting auxiliary lights, GPS systems, and more. I purchased this from the ever reliable Olly at Wrenchride, who I would highly recommend.
Seat – SeatConcepts
Long journeys demand comfort, while off-road excursions require grip and resilience. The SeatConcepts seat strikes the perfect balance, providing ergonomic support for fatigue-free rides across varied terrain. Thanks again to Wrenchride’s efficient service, this upgrade arrived swiftly, enhancing my riding pleasure.
Up front – Rental Bars & Bark Busters
Rental bars are paired with Bark Busters, this is the go to combination for many a CRF riders and you can see why, these robust bars and protective Bark Busters hand gaurds ensure durability and control on rugged trails.
Rack – Rally Raid Rack
Equipping my CRF for extended off-road jaunts, I needed some storage, the Rally Raid rack offers secure base for all my essential gear, such as bags and panniers.
Storage – Mosko Moto Panniers
I already had the Mosko Moto Backcountry Panniers on another bike, so opting for their Reckless 40L on the CRF was an easy decision. This rackless luggage system easily mounts on my CRF300L, it offers a well designed set up for long day trips, hotel or B&B hopping, and lightweight camping off my bike. The Reckless 40L is 100% waterproof, has separate removable welded-seam drybags that slide/strap into a protective outer harness.
Visibility – Double-Take Mirrors
Double-Take mirrors provide a reliable solution for maintaining visibility in rough conditions. Foldable and durable, they offer a clear view of surroundings, ensuring safety and convenience on every ride.
The ProTaper grips also shown above, deliver superior traction and vibration reduction, enhancing control during lengthy off-road expeditions.
Protection – Bash Plate and Rear Brake Protector
Safeguarding critical components from debris and impacts, the bash plate and rear brake protector ensure the CRF’s longevity and reliability, even in the harshest environments.
Exhaust – Full Yoshimura RS4 Exhaust and DNA Air Filter:
With the Full Yoshimura RS4 exhaust system paired with a DNA air filter, the CRF300L’s performance reaches new heights. Increased power output and improved airflow deliver an exhilarating ride, complemented by a distinctive exhaust note.
Conclusion:
After raiding the after market parts catalogues I’m pleased with my chosen upgrades. My little Honda CRF300L has evolved into the a trusty off-road companion. From enhanced performance to increased comfort and durability, each modification contributes to a personalised riding experience.
