For many riders in the UK, motorcycling is more than just transport – it’s a community, a way to feel free and connected, and a source of balance in everyday life. But when emotional wellbeing falters, not everyone has someone they feel able to talk to. Mental Health Motorbike is a UK charity dedicated to changing that by offering support designed especially for bikers.
Who Are Mental Health Motorbike?
I first came across Mental Health Motorbike at the Lightweight Adventurers Festival a few years ago, where there was a talk about mental health in the motorcycle community.
As a UK registered charity (No. 1196406) Mental Health Motorbike provides free mental health first aid support to the motorcycling community across the country. The charity exists to create purposeful and supportive opportunities so riders can feel supported, understood and connected to others who share their passion for bikes and wellbeing. They work in partnership with clubs, industry groups and other organisations to make this happen.

What They Offer
The focus of Mental Health Motorbike is on practical support and connection, rather than clinical therapy. The charity brings riders together and helps people access supportive conversations when they need them.
Here’s how they do that:
- One‑to‑one support: Riders can talk confidentially with trained mental health first aiders who understand both the lifestyle and the pressures riders face.
- Peer support: There is a members‑only online community where bikers can connect, share experiences and encourage one another in a safe, moderated environment. Many riders offer peer support themselves once they feel able to help others.
- Events and activities: The charity attends and runs events across the UK, offering face‑to‑face support, shared rides, gatherings and wellbeing activities that help break isolation.
- Training and development: Mental Health Motorbike encourages and supports bikers to become qualified mental health first aiders themselves. This builds a wider network of peer support within the motorcycling world.
What They Aim To Achieve
Mental Health Motorbike has clear goals guiding its work:
- Train more bikers in mental health first aid so there is someone local to help in every town and city.
- Raise awareness of mental health issues within the biking community and normalise conversations around them.
- Reduce suicide and support riders when life gets tough.
- Organise mental health awareness activities across the UK.
- Work in partnership with clubs, cafés, retailers and the bike industry to extend support.
- Deliver ongoing programmes that strengthen wellbeing within the community.
These aims reflect a belief that support should be accessible, community‑driven and peer‑led.

Why This Support Matters
Motorcycling itself can have positive effects on mental health. Being on a bike, connecting with others, and spending time outdoors can all help combat stress and loneliness. However, riders are not immune to mental health challenges, and many find it hard to talk about how they’re feeling. Mental Health Motorbike steps in to offer a space where riders feel understood and supported by people who share a similar lifestyle. The charity’s approach combines the strength of community with trained support so no one in the biker world feels alone in their struggles.
How You Can Get Involved
There are several ways to support and engage with Mental Health Motorbike if you’re part of the riding community:
- Join the peer support community to share your experiences and benefit from mutual encouragement.
- Train as a mental health first aider and help others in your own area.
- Volunteer at events or support online groups and networks.
- Help raise awareness by talking about mental health within your club or riding group.
Volunteering and participation help grow the charity’s reach and make support more available to all riders, regardless of background, age or experience.
