While my own bike was in for a service at Triumph, I was handed the keys to a loan bike for the day – a Triumph Speed Twin 900, finished in the striking Phantom Black and Aurum Gold paint scheme.

The Triumph website describes it as a machine that “masterfully blends timeless design with modern engineering, offering a bike that is perfect for both weekend escapes and daily commutes. Its responsive power and dynamic handling deliver a ride that is always exciting, while the signature sound of the Bonneville Twin engine adds to the thrill. With its low seat height and comfortable, upright riding position, the Speed Twin 900 inspires confidence in every rider, no matter the journey. Customisation options let you reflect your own style, while the bike’s premium details and sleek look ensure you stand out wherever you go.”

Having now spent a day with the bike, I’d say that description is pretty much spot on.

First Impressions

The Phantom Black and Aurum Gold colourway is a real head-turner in person. Subtle, but with just enough contrast to give the bike some presence. The Speed Twin 900 carries all the retro charm you’d expect from a Bonneville-inspired Triumph, but with just the right amount of modern edge.

Swinging a leg over, the low seat height immediately stood out. For shorter riders, it’s confidence-inspiring to be able to flat foot at a set of lights – something not all bikes in this category can offer.

On the Road

Once you fire it up, the familiar growl of the Bonneville Twin sets the tone. There’s something about that sound – throaty without being over the top, classic yet refined.

Out on the road, the real star of the show is the 900cc engine. It’s punchy, responsive, and delivers torque right where you want it. Whether you’re weaving through town traffic or rolling on the throttle down a country lane, the bike never feels out of its depth.

The handling is equally impressive – light, predictable, and nimble. It would make both city commutes and weekend escapes genuinely enjoyable.

Comfort and Fit

This is where rider size comes into play. At 900cc, you might expect the Speed Twin 900 to feel like a big bike, but in reality, it’s relatively compact. Taller riders may find 780 mm seat height a little cramped in the legs on longer journeys. On the other hand, riders of shorter stature will appreciate the ergonomics and the ease of managing the bike at low speeds.

Final Thoughts

The Speed Twin 900 is a motorcycle that delivers on its promise: timeless looks, modern performance, and an engaging ride. The engine is undoubtedly the highlight – torquey, characterful, and just plain fun. Add to that Triumph’s attention to detail and a paint scheme as sharp as Phantom Black / Aurum Gold, and you’ve got a bike that’s very easy to fall for.

If you’re after something stylish, practical, and packed with character – whether for commuting, weekend rides, or both – the Speed Twin 900 is well worth a test ride.

KILN MOTO Rating 7/10

Thanks to Staffordshire Triumph for the loan of the bike for the day.
